| How does TairaBunkai.com Work? |
The unique and effective Goju Ryu Karate Bunkai that Taira Sensei has developed is NOT an easy thing to do. Anybody can do it but it does not come easy. In order to be able to master this style of bunkai your Goju Ryu basics must be very solid. The only result waiting for those who are not ready for this next step is technical disaster. The Jundokan, where Taira Sensei has trained virtually his entire karate life is very adamant that Goju Ryu kata, as was taught by both Miyagi Chojun Sensei and Miyazato Eiichi Sensei, is not changed under any circumstances. Attempting to emulate Taira Sensei before you are technically ready WILL cause changes in your kata. Those who are ready for this step can recognise the differences and distinguish the two. Kata is a reference to go back to whenever a point needs clarification. If, when you return to the kata to clarify a point, it is different you have no hope of mastering Goju Ryu or any karate style for that matter.
The Bunkai shown and taught in this site is very complex. When Taira Sensei trains and researches Goju Ryu he does so in a spiral pattern. ALways coming back around in a full circle to his reference points to check that his research is on track and hasn't deviated from the core of Goju Ryu - the kata. Once satisfied with that he begins the next circuit, furthering his research and increasing his ability. It is like climbing a spiral stair case. While you are always ascending you constantly come round is a full circle to where you stand above the point you started - only every time you return to that point, you are a level higher. That is how we train. For this reason, members of this site will not be given everything ad libitum and told to go and work it out. Before you can move to the next level in your Bunkai training your body (note I said body and not your mind) MUST have mastered the previous level. Each level builds on your foundations as a bunkai practitioner. Skip a level and eventually you will lose your way. There are no short cuts unfortunately. New video content in the site will be introduced on a regular basis, but not everyday. Instead, members are encouraged to watch the available videos, and then practice, practice, and practice some more. Not until the next set of videos becomes available but until your body remembers what your brain is trying to tell it to do. Then, and only then should you move on to the next set of videos. Video content is just a small part of this site. The majority of your research and motivational stimulus will come from full use of the live chat, forums, and reading the daily blog. This community is like a family, ask questions, post your thoughts, get feedback, give feedback, talk to each other, talk to Taira Sensei. That is the only way we will grow.
